Journalism & Mass Communication Schools in the United States of America

Index of links to many of the schools and university departments that offer journalism and mass communication as a program in the US.

Journalism is an arena favoured by individuals who are inquisitive and are willing to penetrate into less known facts that need to be expressed with an element of social responsibility unlike the mundane daily grind of a conventional job. Organisations who provide information to the general public through various media need to maintain integrity, possess time sense, accuracy and must be responsible in utilising their independence.

This is one field that requires a lot of self-learning to be done. So if a student opts for a Bachelors course,  it is specifically necessary that they take the initiative to reach out to  people and develop social contacts to understand the functioning of media organisations besdies gaining insight on the intricacies of political, sports, film reporting.

If one aspires for a specialisation, he/she can opt for online, broadcast and print journalism. Moving on to the Masters level, though universities generally don't demand a prior media experience, it is suggested that candidates get well acclaimed with their respective specialisations through adequate field work. Meanwhile, GRE, TOEFL scores and work samples with respect to their interests are the parameters that universities consider to evaluate a student during the admission process. Though the program requirements actually vary, they often include 2-4 semesters of coursework. The aspects that a student should look for in a university of their choice are skilled professors backed by their adequate experience as a reporter, competent state of the art facilities and sufficient co-curricular exposure.

The list of universities which are prominently favoured by students include Columbia University - New York , University of Colorado - Boulder, The University of Texas at Austin, Northwestern University-Evanston, Illinois and University of Missouri-Columbia, Missouri.

Coming to the job prospects, the students especially  who opt for print journalism in the US need to strive really hard to get into places like NYT, WSJ, Washington Post and USA Today. Annual reports reveal that weeklies, broadcast journalism have a promising future. The survey found that the median salary of $30,000 was offered for a graduate. However, the salary for a graduate with a Master's degree was found to be around $36,200.

Journalism on a final note can prove to be an immensely gratifying career option provided you stay content with the pay packages. Its rare that you can find an option that keeps you aware of your society in the process of work.
