abate (verb) decrease in severity; moderate; subside.

When some thing, especially harmful or dangerous, becomes less severe, it abates. For example, if it continues to rain heavily without a break, we say that the rain hasn't abated. A fever abates or continues unabated, depending on whether it subsides or continues. The heat of a desert continues unabated for most of the year.

  • The innocent smile of the baby abated his anger.
  • The violence of the mob abated only when he tendered an apology.
  • I see no signs of the floods abating as yet.
