abject (adj) mean, low, and even shameful.

Poverty of which a person is ashamed is abject poverty. Slavery is abject if the slave is denied the decent life of a human being. If a person is ready to apologize for a very silly mistake and out of fear, it is abject apology. If some one is too afraid to resist an attack and surrenders meekly, it is abject surrender.
