abrasive (adj) rubbing off (a surface).

Some times rough substances are used to clean a surface, to smoothen it, or to wear away a layer of it. Such substances are abrasive. If a person's behavior is rude and unkind and hurts other's feelings, they or their manner is abrasive. Words also can be described as abrasive. A substance which rubs off the layer of a surface is an abrasive. (eg: emery paper, file, etc.).

  • His abrasive manner has left him friendless and he leads a lonely life, as even his children have left him.
  • She is not conscious of her own abrasive behavior and is surprised to observe that others are reluctant to move with her.
