abrogate (verb) to abolish; to end by law.

If officially, a government abolishes a law, the law is abrogated. If a government terminates an agreement which is in force, it abrogates the agreement. If a body like a council or corporation is abolished, it is abrogated. There are cases of military officials becoming rulers by toppling the governments elected according to the constitution. In such cases, we say that the ruler has abrogated the government or the constitution.

  • The present government wants to abrogate the agreement entered into by the previous government with some of the foreign investors.
  • The military general has seized power in the country and has abrogated the constitution and the parliament.
