abscond (verb) to leave hastily and secretly (a place).
To leave a place secretly and in haste, especially to escape from law is to abscond. If a person for whom police are searching runs away or escapes from them, they are absconding. A person disappearing from a place after stealing something there is said to be absconding. If a bank cashier suddenly leaves the bank with the bank's money, then we say he has absconded. A convict escaping from prison and not traced is absconding.
- As the prisoner who has absconded is considered dangerous, the police have been given orders to shoot him at sight.
- An enquiry has been ordered to find out the circumstances in which he was able to abscond with so many guards around.
