absolve (verb) to declare that a person is not guilty, after a due process of trial.

In a court, if a judge finds and declares that a person has not committed or is not responsible for a crime, they are absolved of all crimes. If the head of a religion/God forgives a sinner of his sins, they are absolved of their sins.

  • His wife and son were greatly relieved when for lack of sufficient evidence, he was absolved of the murder charges brought up against him.
  • True repentance, the priest assured her, would certainly absolve her of all her sins.
