abstinence (noun) avoidance of, or restraint, in matters of food and drink.

'abstinence' consists in avoiding, voluntarily, all the enjoyable things of type like good food, alcohol, or sex especially on moral, religious, or health grounds. A person practicing abstinence thinks it rather immoral, irreligious, or injurious to health to eat or drink more than necessary. We can say, people who vow to fast, drink only occasionally, do not indulge too much in sex, practice abstinence. Morals or religion apart, abstinence does indicate self discipline, ability for determination, and resistance to temptation.

  • Contrary to what we usually believe, not all practicing abstinence have sound morals or are very devout.
  • Abstinence helps people to be free from avoidable health disorders and thus to live longer.
