academic (adj) of educational matters; not connected with a practical situation; (noun) a person connected with education and higher learning, a professor, a researcher, or an educationist is an academic.

The syndicate of a university or its senate deals with academic matters such as what courses the university offers, the methods of testing and evaluation, the research facilities, etc.. The director/the vice-chancellor/the president of a university, and the members of the academic council are usually the persons in charge of its academic matters. Discussing whether a team could have won if it had played better is purely an academic discussion, because it has lost the game any way. If we are not going on a holiday, it is a purely academic question how we would spend the holiday.

  • As he is an academic of high renown, he deserves to be the head of the university, though, not all concerned are in favor of him.
  • It is unfortunate to see those with hardly any experience as educators being in a position to decide academic matters affecting the careers of thousands of students.
