accede (verb) agree; concede; to get into a high position, especially, that of a ruler.

When you accept a request, proposal or demand, especially under some pressure, you accede to it. If the boss yields to the demand of his workers for a reduction of work hours, he accedes to their demand. If after repeated requests you agree to accompany a person to some place, you accede to their request.

  • When no member of the board was in his favor, his only choice was to accede to the board's demand for his resignation.
  • The government acceded to the demands of the business community to liberalize the taxation policy.
  • The present king being childless, who will accede to the throne after him is a question on every body's mind.
