accrue (verb) to grow over a period of time, accumulate (especially profits, income, interests on loans, etc.).

As interest goes on growing, it accrues. For example, we say that interest accrued beyond a certain limit is taxable. When the interest on your bank deposits grow to a big amount, interest accrues on the deposits. A person's debts grow over a period if the interest is compounded, so the person accrues debts.

  • The finance company's balance sheet shows that the profits accrued during this year is three times the profits last year.
  • His failure to pay interest promptly on the loan has caused it to accrue to a sum higher than the principle.
