acknowledge (verb) admit; agree that some thing is true; accept; recognize.

When you acknowledge a person's greatness, you admit that he is great. If the police agree that crimes are unchecked, they acknowledge that the law and order situation is bad. Almost every one agrees that Japan is able to compete with the US in technology, so the competition from Japan is an acknowledged fact. If we recognize some one's presence, we acknowledge their presence. To say that a letter or an article has been received is also to acknowledge it. If a person wants you to acknowledge their letter to you, they want you to let them know you have received it.

  • That the threat of extinction of wild life is real and that some thing ought to be done urgently about it is acknowledged by all right thinking people.
  • I have yet to receive from the university an acknowledgement of my application for admission.
