acrid (adj) strong and bitter (smell and taste); pungent.

Smoke, for example, from some burning material may have an acrid smell. The smell we get when leather is burnt is acrid. Some fruits have acrid taste. If a room is not cleaned after food material spills on the floor, the room may smell acrid.

  • I could not enter the room as it was filled with the acrid smell of the burnt plastic ware.
  • All synthetic material including rubber leave behind an acrid smell when they are burnt.
