acrimonious (adj) full of bitter feelings and words (of an argument, quarrel, or a debate).

When two people argue with each other using very strong words expressing anger and bitterness, the argument is acrimonious. When a debate between two people or two groups of people leads to an exchange of strong and angry expressions, it is an acrimonious debate. Acrimonious words pass between two people, if they argue bitterly about some point. An exchange of words between two people can turn acrimonious if they are both short-tempered.

  • As the debate in the house turned acrimonious with the participants indulging in personal accusations, the president adjourned the meeting.
  • What started as a very pleasant exchange of words suddenly turned acrimonious, as one of them could not tolerate the other man's jokes at him.
