acuity (noun) keenness of vision (sight), hearing, or thought.

If a person has the ability to see clearly, they have acuity of vision. As age grows, we lose the ability to see clearly or hear well, or we lose acuity of vision and hearing. Acuity also means the ability to think clearly. When people become senile because of old age, or some illness, their acuity weakens.

  • The parents were shocked to be told by the doctor that their child lacked acuity of hearing, so it would need a hearing aid.
  • His acuity of thinking weakened because of his brain damage caused by an accident.
