adapt (verb) to change (to suit a particular purpose); to modify; to change one's behavior, to adjust oneself to the changing circumstances; to make changes in a book, novel, play, etc., to make it suitable for production on the stage, as a movie or as a TV program.

Changing the design of a car to make it suitable for use by the physically challenged, is to adapt its design for use by them. If a tool or a piece of equipment is modified for our special uses, it is adapted for our use. If you have a problem adjusting yourself to the changed circumstances, you fail to adapt yourself.
