adhere (verb) to stick to, to hold on to, to follow (a principle, a policy, an argument, etc.).

Following a principle is adhering to it. To stick to one's opinion and refuse to change it, or agree to others' opinion is to adhere to one's opinion. To follow very strictly a principle, a way of life, or a type of food, etc., is to adhere to it.
