admonish (verb) to warn; to rebuke.

When you tell someone firmly that you don't like what they have done, you admonish them. A teacher admonishes their pupils for their noisy behavior in class or for wasting time. A father may admonish his children for using bad language in presence of elders.

  • Children's behavior does improve, but not always because their parents or teachers admonish them.
  • Their frequent misbehavior forced even their affectionate father to admonish them severely.
