adverse (adj) unfavorable; unfriendly; hostile.

Adverse circumstances are circumstances totally unfavorable to us. Fighting with inadequate weapons with a strong enemy is fighting in adverse conditions (the results are unlikely to be good for us). Adverse weather conditions are the conditions of weather likely to spoil our attempts. If in the middle of a journey a storm breaks out, the weather is adverse. If a person makes comments against you, they are adverse comments.

  • The weather suddenly turned adverse when the mountaineers were a few yards short of the peak.
  • The manager, with so many having a negative attitude in the office, found himself functioning in an adverse environment.
