affidavit (noun) a sworn written statement; a written statement declared under oath as true.

This term is legal. A statement in writing, which you swear is true, and which is attested by a notary, or a court official, is an affidavit. It can be used as evidence in a case.

  • To grant him bail, the judge required his affidavit that he had been out of town at the time of the crime in which he appeared as an accused.
  • He stated in the affidavit that his date of birth and other details as entered in his birth certificate were incorrect.
