affinity (noun) a feeling of understanding or liking for somebody or some thing; a close relationship between two persons or two things having similarities.

When you feel you understand a person and like them, you have affinity with them or for them. A teacher who likes a pupil because some thing in the pupil appeals to the teacher, the teacher has affinity for the pupil. If you like a place because, say, you have spent your happiest moments there, you have affinity for the place. A close relationship between two things or persons because of some common features is also affinity. For example, if you observe a similarity between two languages related to each other, there is affinity between them.

  • The poet Wordsworth's affinity with nature is well known, so it is not surprising that his poetry deals with the affinity between human beings and nature.
  • She and her cousin share the same interests, which is responsible for the strong affinity between the two.
