affront (noun) insult; slight; disrespect.

A remark or an action meant to insult someone is an affront. A person's rude talk to, or, rude behavior towards elders, or to people in higher positions, is an affront. A pupil disobeying, or talking back to their teacher is an affront. A speaker's remarks which are insulting to the listeners, are an affront to the listeners. An open violation of rules is an affront to those in authority.

  • Many among the audience felt some of the remarks in his speech as an affront to them and walked out in protest.
  • He was not given an opportunity to speak at the party meeting. He felt it an affront and resigned from the party.
