agape (adj) open-mouthed (in shock or surprise).

When you stare open-mouthed at something very surprising you are agape. If some news or a sight shocks a person so much that they become speechless and open their mouth wide, they are agape. People are agape when they experience wonder or a shock caused by a horrible sight.

  • He stared agape when he met with another man who was identical with him in every respect.
  • She was agape when she saw the shocking sight of her child knocked down by a car in the busy market place.
