alienate (verb) to cause someone to be less friendly with another person.
When differences arise and friends are no longer friends, there is alienation between them. A person who creates quarrels between two friends alienates the one from the other. A man's suspicion of his wife's character might alienate him from her; that is, differences arise between them and they might be separated.
