alimony (noun) payments (ordered by court) made by a person to their former spouse (after divorce).

If a wife and husband are divorced, either may move the court for a regular payment from the spouse for maintenance. If the court orders the payment, the payment is alimony. In a majority of cases the wife happens to be dependant on the husband, and usually it is the husband who is ordered to pay the alimony to the wife. Who pays alimony to whom depends on what grounds the alimony is claimed.

  • Ann was ordered to pay a huge amount as alimony to her former husband Bill as his claim of advancing money for Ann's investment in business was allowed by the court.
  • Martha approached court as her former husband John had stopped payment of alimony to her, as had been ordered by the court.
