allay (verb) to reduce worry, fear, anxiety, etc..
If you are worried about lack of funds for your education, and if some one close to you tries to lessen your worry or fears by their words of comfort or acts of help, they allay your fears. If your father assures you that he will finance you through college, when you are in doubt about it and are worried, he allays your worries. Your fears that the worst might happen are allayed when someone, say, your friend assures you of help should anything go wrong.
