SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

allege (verb) (usually legal) to state something is true without showing a proof.

When you say, without proof, that someone has stolen your car, you allege that the person has committed theft. When people say that a man has murdered his wife, and if it is yet to be proved, they allege that he has committed murder. To make a complaint without proof is to allege.

  • Though the woman alleged that her husband had been torturing her physically and mentally, none, including the judge, believed her, as she was unable to furnish proper proof of her allegations.
  • The police allege that only because he was drunk while driving, the accident claiming the lives of at least two, took place.
