When pain or suffering is alleviated, it is reduced. When we make a person's suffering, misery, poverty, etc., less, we alleviate the suffering, pain, etc.. When steps are taken to relieve the victims, say, of an earthquake, attempts are made to alleviate their suffering. The Governments of many countries and the UN are busy launching programs to alleviate poverty in those countries.

  • In addition to the steps taken by the governments of the affected countries, a number of organizations have rushed help to alleviate the sufferings of the recent tsunami victims.
  • Though the UN is doing a lot to alleviate the poverty in the third world countries, much more remains to be done to eliminate poverty altogether.
