allocate (verb) to assign funds, persons, (as a portion, a share, etc.) for a particular purpose.

If funds are assigned, on the basis of need, for a particular purpose, they are allocated. If, for example, a certain sum in the budget of a country is set apart for child welfare, we say that the amount has been allocated for child welfare programs. If money is allocated for a particular purpose, it should be spent on that purpose. A person is allocated a certain duty or responsibility, if they are allotted that duty or responsibility.

  • An allocation of $2000 billion has been approved by the senate for strengthening the internal defense and security systems.
  • The allocation of funds for higher education in the budgets of many countries forms barely ten percent of the total budget expenditure, as in most of these countries, provision of food and shelter demands greater priority.
