alloy (noun) a mixture of two or more metals.

A substance formed from the mixing of two or more metals is an alloy. Brass and bronze are examples of alloys. Stainless steel is also an alloy. Ornaments are made not only of gold, but also of alloys in which gold is a component.

  • Alloys are useful because they combine the most useful properties of the metals mixed to suit specific needs for which pure metals are of no use.
  • Alloys of gold facilitate the making of ornaments which are cheaper than those made of gold and at the same time are equally attractive.
