allusion (noun) an indirect reference.

A person's indirect reference in speech or writing to something is their allusion to it. When you make an allusion to undeserving people occupying high positions, you are referring indirectly to their lack of merit. Your indirect reference to a man who has helped you and wishes to remain unknown, is your allusion to him.

  • Whenever the leader talked about the inefficiency of the present government, by alluding to its failures as achievements, the audience cheered him loudly.
  • A satire is a piece of writing which attacks a society, an organization, etc., by alluding to their practices, customs, etc..
