altercation (noun) a noisy quarrel; a heated exchange of words.

When two persons quarrel noisily over something, they have an altercation, or there is an altercation between them. A noisy quarrel between two persons is an altercation. Some times an altercation may lead to a fight.

  • What had started as an exchange of jokes between George and Bob turned into an altercation with Bob taking offence at George's referring to Bob's snub nose.
  • As the shopkeeper refused to replace the damaged piece the customer had bought at the shop, there followed an altercation between the two.
