altruistic (adj) very generous; selfless.

An altruistic man cares more about others' happiness and welfare than his own. A person who gives liberally to charities, endowments, and other public causes, is altruistic. People who place others' interests above their own are altruistic.

  • Andrew Carnegie surprised everyone by giving away a large share of the wealth he had amassed to charitable and public welfare organizations and by creating wealthy endowments and thus proving himself very altruistic.
  • Affluence does make people altruistic, because people tend to be generous and can afford to be charitable when they are prosperous.
