amalgamate (verb) to merge; to join (two or more bodies into one); to combine.

When two or more organizations, institutions, associations, etc., merge to form a bigger organization, institution, etc., they amalgamate, or they are amalgamated. When two institutions amalgamate, they join into a bigger school. If two or more associations amalgamate, they combine to form a bigger association.

  • The two giant corporations have decided to amalgamate, as they have not been able to cut losses in profits because of the competition they are facing from each other.
  • All the colleges in the region are amalgamating into a university, as this will make them eligible for huge grants from the state.
