amass (verb) to accumulate; to collect over a period a large quantity of some thing.

When a person gathers a large amount of money and property, they amass wealth. To go on adding to one's possessions, is to amass wealth. A person who goes on earning money and accumulates a large amount over a period, amasses money.

  • Andrew Carnegie amassed great wealth during the active part of his career, but gave away a lot of it towards the end of it, as he believed that it was a disgrace to live poor and die rich.
  • He had a passion for wealth, and amassed it like mad, but it could not cure him of cancer.
