ambulatory (adj) (of a patient) able to walk about, and not confined to bed; moving around easily; related to walking (also mobile and ambulant).

A patient who is able to walk about and is not bedridden is an ambulatory patient. Ambulatory is the opposite of bedridden. A mobile medical service is ambulatory. An ambulatory passage is a passage suitable for walking.

  • Though Bennet has serious health problems and has been advised bed rest, he keeps moving about and at times even plays golf. He is an ambulatory patient.
  • Ambulatory people cannot rest for long. They feel uncomfortable if they do not keep moving around.
