When we try to ameliorate a situation, we try to make it less severe, less unbearable for those affected by it. To ameliorate poverty is to improve the conditions of those living in poverty. When the starving are assured of enough food, their hunger is ameliorated.

  • The UN agencies are focused on, and to some extent have succeeded in, ameliorating the drought and famine affected areas in some of the third world countries.
  • To ameliorate the conditions of those living in subhuman conditions in slums requires a huge effort and vast funds.
