amnesty (noun) a general pardon ordered by a government for the release of prisoners, especially political prisoners; a period during which if a person confesses their guilt or gives up weapons is not punished.

If a group of prisoners, especially political, are ordered to be released, they are given amnesty. On days of national celebration, governments may order the release of certain classes of prisoners. That is, the governments grant them amnesty. Amnesty is also a period during which a person is left unpunished, if they admit to committing a crime.

  • With the change of government in the country, all those serving prison terms for various offences short of murder and homicide were granted amnesty.
  • The joy of his family knew no bounds when they heard the news that Luther convicted for his political beliefs was among those granted amnesty.
