amphibious (adj) capable of living both on land and in water; suitable for use both on land and in water (vehicles, planes, etc.).

An amphibious creature can live both on land and in water. The frog, for example, is amphibious. Aircraft capable of landing on, and taking off, from either land or water is amphibious. Any vehicle suitable for use both on land and in water is also amphibious. An amphibious creature is an amphibian. Some times amphibian is also used as an adjective.

  • Amphibious creatures like the frog have the advantage of living both on land and in water, and cannot be classified either as land animals or as water animals.
  • Amphibious aircraft was developed to satisfy military requirements during the period of World War II.
