amplify (verb) to strengthen (especially sound, electric signals, etc.); to elaborate (a comment, a story, etc.).
When we want to be heard by a large audience, we speak into the mike, which connected with an amplifier, amplifies our voice; that is, it makes our voice louder. People sing into microphones so that their voice is amplified by the amplifier. When we elaborate or make more detailed some point, a comment, or a story, we amplify it.
