amputate (verb) to cut off a part of the body by surgery.

When doctors amputate an organ, because it is too infected (attacked by harmful bacteria), and as it may infect the other parts of the body too, they cut it off. Usually the parts amputated are a leg, an arm, a finger, and a toe. Amputating, that is, cutting off a part of the body is done mainly to save the rest of the body.

  • Having had his leg amputated because it was gangrenous, Solomon walks with the help of crutches, and moves about in a car specially designed for him.
  • Though physically challenged, as a result of the amputation of his foot, Geoff's passion for motor sports continues and he participates in every race.
