analgesic (adj) a pain reducing substance (usually a chemical or a mixture of chemicals); a painkiller.

Drugs which can relieve us of any kind of pain like headache, body aches, etc., are analgesics. Aspirin is an example of an analgesic. Analgesics relieve us of pain by making us insensitive to it. They free us from the pain caused by a medical condition but do not cure us of the disease.

  • The doctor prescribed an analgesic to give Maria immediate relief from body aches and gave her another drug to cure her of flu.
  • Analgesics do relieve us of pain, but there is a likelihood of our getting addicted to them.
