analogy (noun) similarity; likeness.

When we see a similarity between two things we can draw an analogy between them; that is, compare one to the other. An analogy exists between a solution to a problem and a key. We can draw an analogy between the editor of a magazine and the director of a movie, that is compare one to the other, because of the similarity of their functions.

  • The teacher drew an analogy between the central processing unit of a computer and the human brain.
  • You can always draw an analogy between the heart of a human being and the engine of an automobile, because of their vital importance in each case.
