anesthetic (noun) a chemical which makes a person lose sensation, especially to pain, in a part or the whole of the body, without making them necessarily unconscious.

When a patient has to undergo a painful operation, doctors put them under an anesthetic. That is, the doctors usually inject a drug which makes the patient lose sensation to pain. Such a drug is an anesthetic. Depending on whether the operation is major or minor, a part of the body, or the whole body may be put under an anesthetic. The patient may also be unconscious during the operation.

  • As the anesthetic was not properly administered, Sam regained consciousness even before the operation was complete and groaned in pain.
  • Doctors should be very careful in putting patients under anesthetics, because there is always the risk of the patients never regaining consciousness.
