anneal (verb) to harden glass or metal by heating and then cooling it alternately.

Glass and some other substances, which are brittle (easily broken) are made hard by heating first and then by cooling slowly. This process is annealing. Reducing the brittleness and toughening a substance is called annealing.

  • We are able to use glassware safely because of the process of annealing, without which it becomes unusable.
  • The finish and the durability of glassware depend entirely on how well they are annealed.
