annex (verb) attach a territory of another country to your country by force and make it a part of your territory.

If a conquering country makes a part of its own territory, a defeated country or a part of it, the conquering country annexes the defeated country or a part of it. Germany annexed Austria means that Germany brought Austria under its control. In the olden days, rulers often invaded other countries to annex them.

  • Alexander the Great on a campaign of the conquest of the world annexed country after country until his campaign ended in India.
  • History is full of examples of rulers interested more in annexing territories and thus aggrandizing themselves than in the welfare of the people they ruled.
