annotate (verb) give explanatory notes and comments on a text.

When an author annotates a passage or a text, they explain it and make comments on it so that it can be understood easily. In other words, to explain and comment on a text or to elaborate it, is to annotate it. A number of critics and scholars have annotated the plays of Shakespeare to help the modern reader appreciate them.
