annul (verb) to make invalid; to end something by force (by law).

If the parties to an agreement declare that they no longer follow the agreement, the agreement is annulled. The parties annul it, because they no longer honor it. A divorce annuls a marriage; that is, a divorce ends a marriage and the wife and husband are separated. A new law might annul the provisions of an old law. If people or nations cancel agreements, they annul them.

  • The divorce between Philip and Mary has annulled their nine month-long marriage.
  • The continuous firing all along the border by both the countries has annulled the cease-fire agreement between them.
