anoint (verb) make holy; declare something holy; sanctify; consecrate.

If a priest (Christian practice) puts a few drops of sacred oil or water on a person's head and declares them holy, the priest anoints them. Anointing is purely a Christian practice, and is similar to baptism, in which a person is accepted into the Christian religion by putting sacred water on them. An anointed crown refers to the crown worn by the king after the ceremony of crowning.

  • The priest alone is entitled by scriptures to anoint people, and the ceremony takes place in the church only.
  • Anointment and the confessional are two very important aspects of catholic faith, and the adherents regard them as very holy.
