antecede (verb) happen before (of two incidents); precede.

If something happens earlier than something else, the earlier happening antecedes the later happening. The American Civil war anteceded the assassination of president Lincoln. That is, the American Civil War took place before Lincoln was assassinated. Animal space flights anteceded manned space flights. This means that animals were sent up into space before man flew into space.

  • Balloons anteceded airplanes, as even before the first plane flew into air, several men took to the air in balloons.
  • The bombing of Hiroshima anteceded that of Nagasaki by a short period, during World War II.
